Pet owners should begin housetraining a puppy immediately upon arriving home. This is not a difficult task and should be handled in a positive manner. Setup a routine and stick with it. Dog's are creatures of habit and learn quickly with a routine. The use of a crate can help to speed up the process.
Housetraining a puppy is easy if you setup a routine. Schedule your dogs bedtime and wake time, make sure you feed meals at the same time daily. Make sure you take them out often.
1. Take them out before bed
2. When they wake up in the morning.
3. 20-30 minutes after eating or drinking.
4. After they have been playing for about 15-20 minutes.
5. Anytime they come out of the crate.
It is best to use a crate when housetraining a puppy. Dog's are den animals and will not soil where they sleep. Make sure you get a crate that is not to big for them, they just need enough room to stand up, turn around, and lay down, (if it's to big, then they will use one side to go potty and the other to sleep). If you don't want to use a crate, then put your pup in a small room with newspapers on the floor when you can't supervise them. Always keep a close eye on your puppy until they are house trained.
Have a designated spot in the yard for your puppy to potty. Also, when housetraining a puppy it is best to go outside with them. This way you can make sure they go and praise accordingly. Always praise your puppy for doing the right thing.
