Hello, dear reader, here is our primary episode on our 'how do I train my dog series'. This first episode will be easy for you and your dog, but you need absolute patience to accomplish this task.
Start the training by placing a leash or halter on your pet and make your dog stand on the ground in front of you. Step on the lead so that your hands are free, and your dog will not run away from you. Make sure all of your dogs attention is focused on you. Talk to your dog or hold one of your dog's favorite toys in your hand to make sure that you have all the attention you need.
When your dog is closely watching what you are doing, let your dog smell the food in your hand so that your dog's attention will be heightened.
As your dog looks at the treat, say "Sit" in a firm, but kind, tone and move the threat toward the forehead, by doing this, your dog will be forced to sit. If your dog sits, give the food immediately and praise your pet by tapping and rubbing the forehead gently. If your dog chooses to grab for the food, move your hand away behind your back and use your other hand to make your dog stand quietly in front of you again.
You may need to push down your dog slowly to haunches and show your dog what to do few times before your dog understood this routine. Repeat placing the treat in front of your dog's nose and say "Sit," if your dog accomplishes the task many times in a row. Reward your dog and praise his or her immediately.
Now that your dog is responding positively, gradually remove the food. Eventually, you won't need the treat at all to make your dog obey.
Don't make this training session more than twenty minutes at a time. Canine behavior experts for the ASPCA state that to train dogs for more than twenty minutes causes them to lose their attention span, and they won't retain as much information as they do during shorter time periods.
Remember that training your puppy is like training a human baby. Your pet is going to make mistakes and there are going to be setbacks. Patience, consistency, and kindness while working with your furry companion gives you the best chances for success. Training your dog is fun when you know how to train them!
