When it comes to transporting your pet for a move or just for going on an extended vacation, you often will use a pet crate. However, it is not a good idea to shove your bewildered dog into a crate with no warning. Here are some crate training dog tips to help make the transition a little easier for your dog.

First, if you can obtain a crate in advance and allow your dog to begin using it for naps and such, your pet will be much less afraid of the enclosed space. Being familiar with the dimensions of the crate and feeling comfortable with it will help your dog to remain calm once it is time to enter the actual crate that will be used for transportation. In fact, your pet may possibly look on the proceedings with some interest when the real trip begins.

Second, place items in the crate that has familiar scents and textures for your pet. A favorite blanket and a toy or two will help a lot. You may also want to include an article of your clothing, so your pet has the familiar scent of you nearby as a comfort factor. This may be your single most effective crate training dog tip. Being surrounded by scents that are known and comforting can go a long way toward keeping your dog collected while traveling to your destination.

Last, keep in mind that if all else fails, you may be able to get your vet to provide your dog with a shot that will help him or her sleep most of the trip. The thing to remember is that your vet will know what type of tranquilizers to administer to your pet based on age, size, and health. Your pet will be in no danger. In fact, should you find that none of the crate training dog tips seem to work, this may be the most humane option.
